It is the kind of story that a fiction writer would come up but even more bizarre. As the old saying goes "truth is stranger than fiction."
For starters, know this: I have zero patiened with the psuedo-Skeptik and Debunker ilk who pretend to be impartial, objective and scientific. They are, in fact, just the reverse. Seldom do they thoroughly study the details any well-documented case, they are not inconsiderate but arrogant when it comes to defaming witnesses as well. Now let us examine this extraordinary case.
Historian Reg Watson has been researching the disappearance for many years.
"I've looked at it for gosh, three decades," he told Leon Compton on 936 ABC Hobart.
"I have to say, in my opinion, he had an encounter with a UFO — and I don't say that lightly."
We can rest assured that the historian would not make such a public statment unless he was utterly convinced by the evidence. The last words that the young pilot made was brief and cryptic.
'It's not an aircraft'
Valentich went missing on the night of October 21, 1978. That statement was made during live transmission between the pilot and tower. First he led up to that cryptic description by describing a craft flying over him. He thought it might be some kind of plane. However, as it approcahed he saw that it clearly was not.
Historian Watson said that the reason Valentich was flying wanted to increase his flying hours and planned to fly from Moorabbin in Victoria to King Island.
He left Moorabbin at 6:19pm and made radio contact with air traffic control in Melbourne at 7:06pm.
"He asked if there was any sort of aircraft in the area,"Watson told a reporter.
Valentich was told there was "no known traffic". He went on to report a large unknown aircraft had flown over the top of him and added: "It seems to be playing some sort of game. He's flying over me."
The pilot continued to speak with air traffic control in Melbourne about the craft until 7:12pm and that was the last anyone heard from him. This is all documented on a tape, and can be heard, that the air traffic control tower made. It is spooky and emoitionally disturbing stuff...and I say that as a 50 year vetern of UFO investigations.
Authorities searched for Valentich for four days but nothing was ever found of his plane. The implications are so staggering that only a stone cold sober attitude should be adopted when pondering the facts. We can hear the young pilot, obvsiouly mystified and concerned as the UFO plays a game of cat and mouse with him.
When it finally closes in and he sees it is no typical manmade aircraft it is the wierd silent moment and then a grating metallic noise that punctuates the suspence. That is where the factural account ends.
The rese is sheer speculation. The facts are that Valentich disappeared while in flight and no trace of him or his craft have been found since. You decide.
